Generic medicine finder: search by salt name

Generic medicines contain the same active ingredient (salt) at the same strength as a branded medicine. Type the salt printed on your pack to see every brand we stock that contains it — then compare price and stock side by side.

How do branded and generic medicines compare?

Same salt, same strength, same form — different maker and usually a different price. These pairs are both stocked at MediLane.

Never switch a prescription medicine without checking with your doctor or pharmacist — particularly for diabetes, blood pressure, thyroid or epilepsy.

What is a generic medicine?

A generic medicine is a medicine sold under its active ingredient's name (or a different brand name) that contains the same salt, at the same strength, in the same dosage form as the original brand. It is registered for sale in Pakistan by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP).

How to match a generic correctly

  1. Salt — the active ingredient printed under the brand name.
  2. Strength — e.g. 500 mg, 20 mg, 5 mg per 5 ml.
  3. Form — tablet, capsule, syrup, cream, inhaler.
  4. Release type — "SR", "XR" or "MR" versions are not interchangeable with ordinary tablets.

Generic medicines — answered

What is a generic medicine?

A generic medicine contains the same active ingredient (salt), in the same strength and dosage form, as a branded medicine. It is sold under the salt name or a different brand name, usually at a lower price.

Are generics as effective as branded medicines?

Registered generics must contain the same active ingredient at the same strength. Differences are usually in inactive ingredients, packaging and price. Ask the pharmacist if you have allergies to specific inactive ingredients.

How do I find the generic of my medicine?

Search the salt name printed on the pack, usually under the brand name — for example "Paracetamol BP 500 mg". The results list all the brands we stock that contain that salt.

Can I switch my prescription medicine to a generic myself?

Please don't switch on your own. For prescription medicines — especially for diabetes, blood pressure, epilepsy or thyroid — speak to your doctor or our pharmacist first.

Why are generics cheaper?

Generic makers usually don't carry the original research and brand marketing costs, so the price can be lower for the same active ingredient.

Does MediLane label the salt on every product?

Where the salt is known it appears on the product page and in search, next to the brand name, so you can compare like for like.

What does strength mean, e.g. 500 mg?

Strength is the amount of active ingredient in each tablet, capsule or measured dose. When comparing a brand and a generic, the salt, the strength and the form (tablet, syrup, cream) must all match.

Can I compare two medicines side by side?

Yes. Use Compare on any product card or open the compare page to see name, brand, salt, price and stock side by side.
